New Vinnie Video up

I finally got the Karizma live in Germany vid and Vinnie doesn't stop interjecting himself and settle down throughout at least the first tune...it is kinda annoying. He just fills everything up.

But I think he was just probably wired on espresso.

If you guys didnt know that Vince was a total coke head, especially during the Zappa years, then you heard it now. It seems like cocaine seems to be the drug of choice for drummers?? Kinda goes along with the inssant reason for wanting to beat on things for hours, just because??

I think everyone on HOD would stay "high" into our golden years taking the amounts of alcohol and drugs that Gadd did over the years. Throw a few elephants into that mix while you're at it.

Yes.... us drummers are an interesting breed. I like to think of coke as what steriods are to pro athletes. It seems to give us big chops/muscles.

Sorry, I'm way too curious - so was Gadd or VinCola just as keen on the drinking as well as taking coke?? At the same time?? Surely thats a lethal combo. Mixing any booze with recreational drugs would spell doom for any serious muso attempting to play.

I missed how Gadd really nailed this show. I was so into Vinnie's chop fest that I missed the band's reaction to Gadd before, and while he played.

Gadd's solo during his spot was a joke, but his playing "time" during the first tune at a drummer's show was great.

Gadd's solo with Dave & Vinnie was a marching based groove that stood out so significantly at a drummer's show--it was as though music had to come first over chops. Steve was older and more mature than the other two.

yeah man..vinnie was definetely on something during the zappa years...i think all of zappas band were...ive got this zppa video where he makes vinnie do all these random solos and make barking seal noises...its pretty funny but its kinda sad to see how baked those guys were...

Will someone please explain to me the whole "flipping the head back" thing to me? (he had semi-long hair, for crying out loud! I've done the same thing many times before when I had it!). I've never done Coke before (too afraid), but, to me, I've always believed that Vinnie's state of mind in that video was one of sheer nervousness. Consider the following factors: He HATES Video Cameras.......one was right in his face, and he obviously hates being the center of attention...even at that time in my mind (have you EVER heard any audio of him talking to an Audience where he sounded TRULY comfortable??); He was playing tunes that Buddy Himself played with the BR Band........HUGE shoes to try and fill (so to speak); This may have been, in HIS mind, the biggest opportunity to express his talent, and just "supporting" the BB the way THEY would have wanted would have defeated his purpose, though, yes, it may have been more "musical" if he had done so. Yes, Gadd swings very well, and is obviously easy to play with.....WHY is he easy as heck to play with?.....he doesn't do much! (and...yes, a great Pocket). Am I saying you HAVE to do a lot to be great?.....PLEASE....I'm not THAT stupid. Yes, he has one of the most unique Pockets without ANY question, and that can NEVER be disputed, along with the fact that he can play a Groove in his own way. About the first thirty seconds of Gadd's solo in his first tune with the BR Band is GREAT, but after that, he goes out of his element, in my opinion, and does the chop thing, which ruined that solo for me. (screaming, "AGH......AGH......." during triplets and moving his entire body while doing said screams does not constitute me being moved....yes, I understand I'll be shredded for the Gadd Statements) On that night, the BB was most definitely catching up to Vinnie at times, but I've heard that with Vinnie at other times recently as well, and that's just Him. The fills were brilliant, AND musical in my opinion on that vid. His accents are placed like no one else does....what do you expect? Just because the band had to stay on top of things doesn't mean it wasn't musical. Vinnie isn't BR.....Dave isn't BR.....Gadd isn't BR. As far as the Trio at the end, I thought Vinnie played off of Gadd PERFECTLY, and that INCLUDES Gadd's Eights. Gadd was the PERFECT Soloist/Catalyst to Vinnie's Eights that could have occurred in that Trio, and that's why I consider the "Winner" (if you HAVE to choose one) in that Trio, not unlike most of you think, was a TIE with Vin and Steve. I will also agree that Vin's Swing playing, at that time, was not a "traditional" (if you will and so to speak) sounding swing, and didn't swing hard, but there's that SOMETHING with VC that's completely irresistable, and MAKES you want to hear him do it. (he obviously wouldn't be asked to do any Swing Gigs if there weren't that "something"). I think his Swinging has significantly improved from a "swinging feel" standpoint in the last decade or so. Oh, and from an "evolving musically" standpoint, whom, out of those three players that night (SG, VC, and DW) have done so? Dave and Vinnie. Gadd, though I'm quite aware that he doesn't really NEED to, which is a testament unto itself, has NOT added ANYTHING (from what I've heard and seen) to his repertoire, which is fine, but I'm tired of seeing the same ole solo, which everyone seems to think is the greatest thing ever. If that same Groove that he seems to always play in his solos (Drummer's Collective 2002 included) is what does it for you, that's great, but I'm growing tired of some traditionalists saying that his playing hasn't evolved to a more enjoyable level in other players JUST FOR THE SAKE OF "sticking to their Gadd roots". (Gadd's performance, IMO, on the Collective DVD, was quite ordinary, and I personally never watch his section...Weckl and his band completely stole that show without question). I wish more old school/Gadd Era Players were more open to what other Masters like Dave and Vinnie have brought to the table. Do any of the traditionalists think for ONE SECOND that Dave, Vinnie, Virgil, DiCenso, etc, would NOT attribute much of their own roots to Gadd?? They would be just plain silly if they answered in the affirmative. Anyway, I'm through going off, but I still would appreciate an answer about the head-flipping thing.

For some reason I'm remembering an interview somewhere where Vinnie had just walked offstage and was criticizing himself for overplaying, or in his words "forcing" things...I don't know if it was DRUM! or MD, but I remember something.

So apparently he wasn't pleased either, and felt his playing was 'over the top'...

I still love it, though. It's still Vinnie!
